- Sixth Buddhist Synod -

On the full-moon day of Kason, 1316, M.E. 2498 B.E (May, 1954),the Sixth Buddhist Council (Chaṭṭha Saṅgāyana) was held at Kaba Aye Pagoda. Especially "Great Cave" in which the work of the council took place. 2500 monks from 8 Buddhist countries (Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal) attended the Council. There were First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth Buddhist Council.
A major purpose of the Sixth Council was to preserve the Buddha's teachings and practices as understood in the Theravada tradition.
The Sixth Buddhist Council was sponsored by Prime Minister U Nu. Nyaung Yan Sayadaw, Mahasi Sayadaw, Mingun Sayadaw took the leading roles in that council. "Mahasi Sayadaw" was appointed to ask the required questions about the Dhamma to "Mingun Sayadaw", who answered them.
